Magellan Jets and golf star Dustin Johnson’s LIV Golf team have combined in an exclusive global private jet partnership.

Two-time major winner Johnson flies exclusively with Magellan and has recruited 4Aces team-mates Patrick Reed, Pat Perez and Harold Varner III to promote the company and host experiences for its customers.

“Dustin Johnson is highly recognized as one of the best golfers in the world and one of the most knowledgeable and seasoned private fliers in all of sports,” said Joshua Marc Hebert, founder and CEO of Magellan Jets.  “As with many tour players and professional athletes, we appreciate Dustin’s loyalty to Magellan Jets.”

Johnson, the 2016 US Open champion and 2020 Masters winner, said his time is at a “premium” between golf, business and family and described the partnership as the “perfect fit”.

“I committed to being a Magellan Jets cardholder because I trust its personalised service and range of aircraft,” said Johnson, who is from South Carolina but lives in Florida.

“My team at Magellan always goes the extra mile to ensure the comfort and safety of my family and the 4Aces on every trip.”

Magellan Jets recently became the private aviation provider of the Boston Red Sox and hired Todd Goldstein to expand its sports and entertainment division.

The company offers jet card ownership, membership, on-demand charter and aircraft sales and management services.

The 4Aces is one of 13 teams competing in LIV Golf, the league which operates outside the more established PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.

Research by Jet Linx Aviation has shown that a golfer who used private aviation instead of flying commercially could have saved 119 hours, nearly five days of travel time, since the beginning of the year.

“Pro golfers need to get from tournament to tournament quickly and efficiently, which is the same as executives in business.”

Jamie Walker, CEO of Jet Linx Aviation said: “Pro golfers need to get from tournament to tournament quickly and efficiently, which is the same as executives in business.”

“Travel time flying commercially would have taken 192 hours, including airport time and making connections, whereas using a private jet card, the exact same itinerary would have been 73 hours, all nonstop, with minimal airport time. Flying privately reduced wasted travel hours by over 60%,” said Doug Gollan, founder and editor-in-chief of Private Jet Card Comparisons.

Gollan said the challenges of golfers closely reflect those of top executives and owners in the business world.

In 11 of the 30 places the PGA tour has visited so far this year, private jet travellers saved extra time by being able to use airports that are closer to the tournament venues. In the US, private aircraft have access to over 5,000 airports compared to about 500 served by commercial airlines. In 18 of 30 weeks, private aviation enabled golfers to fly nonstop whereas flying commercially would have required a connection.

Ed Bolen, president and CEO of NBAA reflected with sadness on the passing of golf legend Arnold Palmer. Palmer was a long-standing advocate of business aviation.

“Arnold Palmer is a national hero who transcended golf and until his passing, it seemed he even transcended time itself, as multiple generations of people from all over the world recognized and loved this American treasure.”

“Arnold Palmer is a national hero who transcended golf and until his passing, it seemed he even transcended time itself, as multiple generations of people from all over the world recognized and loved this American treasure.” said Bolen.

“While Arnold’s appeal is universal, he holds a truly special place in the hearts of everyone in aviation,” Bolen added. “His passion for flying, his professionalism with over 19,000 hours in the left seat, and his tireless advocacy for our industry, combined to make him our great champion.”

“To honour his legacy, we will dedicate our upcoming convention to his memory. It is especially appropriate to do so as we gather in Orlando, FL, home of the Arnold Palmer Invitational,” Bolen said, referring to the golf tournament held annually at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge, which Palmer has owned since 1974.

A frequent attendee and speaker at NBAA’s conventions, Palmer lent his stature and credibility to a host of NBAA advocacy initiatives. For example, in 2009, he was featured in a so-called “truth” advertisement produced by NBAA, which became one of the cornerstones of the No Plane No Gain campaign, the advocacy program jointly sponsored by NBAA and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association.

“Using business aircraft is the single most productive thing I have done,” Palmer says in the television ad. “It’s given me the opportunity to compete more effectively in golf and in business, and it’s enabled me to do both from a place not served by the airlines.”

That same year, Palmer served as keynote speaker at NBAA’s convention; during his remarks, he declared: “I know the value of business airplanes. I know what they have done for me and my companies. I know how important they are to my hometown. And I know how important they are to this country.”

Palmer was a business leader and also one of the first CEOs to lend his name to NBAA’s “Business Leaders on Business Aviation” initiative, also produced for the No Plane No Gain program. The initiative features testimonials from dozens of CEOs, explaining how the use of an airplane helps their companies achieve their business objectives.”

“Business aviation has given me an important edge,” Palmer states in a compendium of the CEOs produced by NBAA. “It has allowed me to be in more places, in less time, than the competition. As a result, it has given me more opportunities to succeed.”

The November/December 2016 edition of NBAA’s Business Aviation Insider magazine will include a feature story paying tribute to Palmer’s life and legacy.

The London Heliport.

The London Heliport has a number of big events to prepare for over the next few months, including the Santander British Grand Prix, the Ryder Cup and the Farnborough International Airshow.

The heliport has recently had to operate helicopters to Royal Ascot and the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

All these events are contributing to what is set to be a record-breaking summer for the capital’s London Heliport. Overall, bookings at the city’s only licensed heliport are 50 per cent up since the start of calendar year 2014.

The heliport was extra busy on Gold Cup Day at Royal Ascot with 24 extra movements on that day along.

Both Castle Air and Starspeed reported extra helicopter operations over Royal Ascot as well. Starspeed’s Sikorsky S-92 16 seat helicopter is now a regular visitor to the heliport.

Also busy for the period is Capital Air Services, who offer a fully tailor-made and flexible helicopter charter service with helicopters positioned out of their London Oxford Airport base. Capital will take delivery of Europe’s first new Sikorsky S-76D model and the aircraft will be available for charter from August.

Capital reports good take up for Royal Ascot, The British Grand Prix at Silverstone from 3-6 July and is already very busy for the Farnborough Airshow and the Ryder Cup in September. Owing to an increase in its management and charter activities, Capital has also recently recruited several more pilots.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is increasingly popular for helicopters

Simon Hutchins, general manager of London Heliport, says: “The Goodwood Festival of Speed is shaping up to be an increasingly social occasion for corporate helicopter use. We have taken a concentrated number of bookings from one large group which is flying out 60 guests, using 10 helicopters on the Saturday and we have healthy bookings on the Friday and Sunday too.”

“Bookings for Farnborough Air Show, where busy executives can beat the M3 travel in just 20 minutes, is filling up well too with 26 bookings already logged for the first Monday of the show – July 14th.  We tend to get extremely busy for the Farnborough Air Show and we advise corporates to book early in order to avoid disappointment,” Hutchins adds.

Corporate Jet Investor spoke to Simon Hutchins in August last year. You can watch the video footage below:

It takes less than 35 minutes to fly from The London Heliport, located at Battersea, just south of Chelsea Harbour to Goodwood; 15 minutes to Ascot in Berkshire and 35 minutes to reach Silverstone.

Meanwhile, the management of The London Heliport is in dialogue with several interested parties about taking over the sponsorship and naming of one of London’s most iconic sites, now that Barclays sponsorship has expired.

Gama Aviation, a private jet operator headquartered at Farnborough Airport, has launched a new maintenance hangar and handling facility for executive aircraft at Glasgow Airport in Scotland.

The new facility provides an aircraft charter base for Gama Aviation’s Scottish-based customers, but the Gama Aviation Executive Terminal (FBO) will be operational in preparation for next year’s Ryder Cup gold tournament and the arrival of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Gama has also made a newly-delivered Beechcraft King Air 350C available for private charter from Glasgow and will provide full base and line maintenance to support the Beechcraft King Air 200s operating a service for the Scottish Air Ambulance.

Marwan Khalek, CEO of Gama Aviation, said: “We are delighted to complete the first phase of this significant investment project, which is a great showcase for our wide ranging aviation capabilities – all under one roof. We are extremely proud to have been here in Scotland for over two decades and this new facility underlines our long term commitment to this region. We are also delighted to announce the creation of new jobs here in Glasgow as we look towards phase two of our investment programme, when we will double the hangarage and handling capacity of our new facility in 2014.”

“The Scottish business aviation community does not always enjoy the best infrastructure; we hope to improve this in Glasgow,” he added.

Khalek thanked Glasgow Airport, the Scottish Ambulance Service, NHS Scotland, the many local partners and contractors and Gama Aviation’s investors for their support and co-operation in the accomplishment of this project.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “This new facility is a fantastic vote of confidence in the city of Glasgow and the airport. Gama Aviation is making a considerable investment, creating jobs and new business, and the announcement of a second phase of investment underlines this commitment. By using local suppliers right through the design and construction process it has also ensured the economy in this area benefits even further.”

Rolls Royce and Arnold Palmer
Rolls-Royce has honoured ‘The King’ of Golf, Arnold Palmer, for his contribution to business aviation at a trophy presentation during the NBAA in Orlando.

Palmer has been an avid pilot and prominent advocate of business aviation for more than 50 years and the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Pennsylvania is named in his honour.

His relationship with Rolls-Royce began in 1996, when he became the first customer to take delivery of the Cessna Citation X business jet, powered by the Rolls-Royce AE 3007C engine. Arnold Palmer then became the first operator of the Rolls-Royce AE 3007C1 engine when he upgraded to a new Citation X in 1999, an aircraft he still flies today. Throughout this time, he has used Rolls-Royce CorporateCare service to maximise engine availability.

In recognition of Arnold Palmer’s role as an ambassador for business aviation, Rolls-Royce presented him with a mounted AE3007C Citation X fan blade in a ceremony held at the Rolls-Royce stand on the first morning of the NBAA show.

Scott Shannon, Rolls-Royce, executive vice president, Civil Small & Medium Engines, said: “Over the past 50 years Arnold Palmer has had an immensely positive impact on both the world of golf and business aviation. He has consistently extolled the virtues of the use of private aircraft which have enabled him to enjoy a global career.”

Shannon continued “From the outset of his relationship with Rolls-Royce, Mr. Palmer has been a CorporateCare customer, trusting us to deliver excellence just as he has delivered excellence in golf. Rolls-Royce itself celebrates a 50th anniversary this year, recalling the debut of ‘Power-by-the-Hour’ in our engine maintenance services, so it is fitting that we honour Mr. Palmer today. We wish him continued success in all his endeavours.”
