NBAA coalition asks for gradual removal of lead in aviation fuel
The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has teamed up with six other aviation organisations to campaign for the removal lead from aviation fuel, provided it is not done “prematurely”.
The coalition, which includes General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) and National Air Transportation Association (NATA), has formally submitted comments to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The coalition urges EPA and FAA ensure that any findings and follow-on regulations are in line with a viable unleaded alternative. It said it is “committed to removing lead from aviation gasoline” by the end of 2030 or sooner. But it “cannot compromise the safe and efficient operation of the fleet of aircraft, or economically destroy the US general aviation transportation infrastructure, by prematurely removing an essential fuel that many aircraft require for safe operation”.
There are four alternative fuels recommended by the coalition. One that has received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its unleaded fuel.
