A new paid internship programme at Westchester County Airport was announced at last month’s National Business Aviation Association Regional Forum.

Announced by Avports, the managing operator of Westchester for the county, the paid college internship is being run in partnership with Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology and Westchester County. It is aimed at giving students real-world experience in airport administration, operations and airline services while interacting with Fortune 500 aviation departments, commercial airlines, fixed based operators and private pilots.

“Announcing this internship at the most respected and well-attended forum of this type in the nation is important to Westchester County and to Avports,” said Francisco Tejada, Westchester’s airport manager. “The partnership with Vaughn will prove to be a vast pipeline of emerging talent for airports like Westchester and others throughout the region and nation as we hope to draw young aviation professionals with fresh perspectives as they begin their careers.”

The announcement followed an address by NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen before a crowd of about 3,000. Locally, on any given day, the airport is the workplace for some 1,400 employees, and Avports is currently looking to fill 60 positions. Across the US The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that in 2024, there are nearly 17,000 job openings for airline and commercial pilots.

Dr. Sharon B. DeVivo, president of Vaughn College, said: “We are excited to see our long-term relationship with Avports and Westchester County Airport continue to grow with this Vaughn dedicated internship programme. Our alumni work in airports across the metropolitan region, including Westchester Airport, and beyond and that success comes with close industry partners like Avports that understand the importance of developing a talent pipeline.”

Avports’ CEO Jorge Roberts added: “There are so many opportunities that exist in aviation, and if you are willing to work, learn, and have a positive attitude, you will succeed. Personally, I have grown to the level where I am because others saw my potential, and that has driven me to give back so others can achieve similar career success. It’s also why, as a member of the Vaughn College President’s Advisory Committee, I’m so proud to see this internship partnership take off.”

Rones-Payne is excited to join the growing field of aviation. While she may be new to aviation, Rones-Payne is no stranger to customer service. She comes to Million Air from the luxury fashion industry, most recently as General Brand Manager for Gucci, where she was responsible for devising strategies to build clientele and grow revenue.

“We are very fortunate to have someone with Lauren’s extensive background in catering to the very consumers who will be frequenting our FBOs,” said Roger Woolsey, CEO of Million Air. “Lauren’s work with high-end clientele and her familiarity with Westchester and the surrounding area made her the perfect fit for the position.”

Million Air is about people and service, taking care of our customers and letting them know you care. When you are able to cater to their every whim and make it happen, customers remember that.”

Prior to Gucci, Rones-Payne worked for Nordstrom, where she held various positions in customer service and human resources. She is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, an avid marathon runner and Westchester native. She is married and lives locally in White Plains.

At Westchester County Airport, the company recently opened a 52,000-square-foot hangar that is part of an $80 million expansion at the airport. Construction is currently under way on a new 18,000-square-foot terminal. Located adjacent to the new hangar, the two-story Adirondack-styled terminal is luxuriously designed with a resort-style ambiance including elegant seating areas, wood and rock features, stone framed dual fireplaces and wood beam ceilings. West Harrison, NY – County and local officials today joined with executives from Million Air to celebrate the grand opening of Million Air’s new state-of-the-art hangar at its corporate aviation complex at Westchester County Airport.  The 52,000-square-foot hangar is part of Million Air’s $80 million expansion and upgrade at the airport.

The two-story hangar features 28-foot height doors capable of housing a Gulfstream 650, which is Gulfstream’s largest business jet. Floors are heated with a high-tech radiant heat system that allows temperatures to be maintained for aircraft and pilots. The new hangar also includes eight customizable offices with storage space. With the completion of the new hangar, Million Air’s complex now has 84,000 square feet of hangar space and 7.25 acres of ramp space.

“The growth and development of our Million Air network and brand has come as a result of strong dedication from all levels within the organization,” said Roger Woolsey, CEO of Million Air. “As our employees continue to create powerful first impressions at the Westchester County Airport, we are reinvesting in our facilities to create more jobs and better service our customers.  This is a win-win for our team and the Westchester County community.”

Construction is currently under way on a new 18,000-square-foot terminal. “Demand has been on the rise with a steady flow of aircraft coming in to the Westchester County Airport. The aviation industry has improved with the strengthened economy. It’s great to see our region experiencing an increase in new and repurposed construction projects that bring new jobs and new residents to our area.  The airport has certainly facilitated the growth we are experiencing and I extend my sincere congratulations to Million Air and to all who participated in this wonderful project,” said Harrison Town Mayor/Supervisor Ron Belmont.

In May 2016, the Westchester County Board of Legislators approved a 30-year lease with Million Air, granting improvements of the company’s Fixed Base Operation facilities on the 26-acre property at Westchester County Airport. In October 2016, the Westchester County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) approved issuing tax-exempt bonds for Million Air, which lowered the project’s financing costs.

The WWE’s new Global 5000 will replace a Challenger corporate jet, which the company had owned since 2001.

World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. – known to wrestling fans as the WWE – has replaced its 20-year-old Canadair Challenger corporate jet with a 2007 Bombardier Global 5000 (msn 9192 / N700LK) in a transaction financed by RBS Asset Finance.

RBS provided the WWE with $31.6 million on a seven loan term for the aircraft, which will be based at Westchester County Airport in White Plains, New York.

The WWE gave details of its new aircraft in its financial report from the second quarter of 2013 filed to the US Securities and Exchange Commission:

On 16 June 2013, we entered into a purchase agreement to buy a 2007 Bombardier Global 5000 jet for a purchase price of $27 million which will replace the company’s current corporate aircraft. We entered into this purchase agreement after an agreement to purchase a comparable aircraft under similar terms was terminated. We anticipate the total cost of the aircraft including certain improvements to be in the range of $31 million to $33 million. The company expects to market the current aircraft for sale after completion of the purchase of the new aircraft and subsequent refurbishment of both the purchased aircraft and our existing aircraft.

The company has formed a jet services company, known as the WWE Jet Services Inc., to operate the aircraft and will make it also available for private charter, giving wrestling fans the chance to fly on the same jet as their favourite wrestlers.

The aircraft can carry up to 19 passengers and is believed to include a sound-proof cabin and office, featuring internet access, a microwave oven and state-of-the-art coffee maker.
